Treating the Cause, Not the Illness →
Just a year ago, Onie thought that Health Leads’ biggest obstacle would be getting doctors to pay attention to patients’ social needs — given all the demands on their time. Today, the organization is getting so many referrals from doctors, for the first time in its history it has long waiting lists. Five decades after the war on poverty, a work force that can systematically address the social...

uhfrayedknot: I pulled the plug and gave him a 20 minute lecture on slurs, homophobia, straight privilege, and tolerance. After which he switched to calling people dumbasses instead. So, this is one of the many reasons my friend Meron is amazing. Also, take note of what she writes. There is wisdom in this post…

lunch made for tomorrow:
Healthy pasta salad: A serving of shell pasta, a few pieces of leftover lemon chicken breast, with raw cucumbers, olives, green peppers, carrots, red onion, a tablespoon of non-fat Italian dressing, chilling in the refrigerator.  Lately, I’ve been bringing salads to work, but I always find myself losing energy towards the end of the day. I thought this would be a healthy way to add some...

There seems no other explanation for this “Belsen was a gas” name for an Evil Twin jacket, other than it being a pun on Bergen-Belsen, a concentration camp where approximately 50,000 people were murdered. O___________O

Alright, I see what you did there McDonalds. Nice move, now I’m sure privileged, suburban families will feel better about fueling your empire and feeding their children your poison. What McDonalds STILL refuses to do is acknowledge how they pose a huge public health threat to underprivileged areas. I work in Harlem Hospital every week, and have also been a patient in the ER there, and...

sheburnsmyeyes: chlrdz: THIS TO THIS ALWAYS not gonna lie, people who hate on the kindle just haven’t been exposed to the glory of it yet. I love reading a true book with paper and don’t think anything will ever replace that, but carrying around my slim kindle definitely beats lugging around the 800 hardcover books I’ve been reading through this summer. Each to...

BARGHHHH
Fell asleep reading my Kindle the other night… woke up and it was gone and it STILL HASN’T TURNED UP. Also, late to work today because my brother’s bus pulled into the driveway and blocked my car… bus wouldn’t move and my brother didn’t get out for another ten minutes… so I was mad late. great. god damn.

getting sick of people moralizing death...
OBVIOUSLY the tragedy in Norway is EXTREMELY important and devastating, but it’s possible for people to be upset over more than one thing at once. Amy Winehouse moved so many of through her music. It’s a huge loss of talent. What happened in Norway is horrifying, and I send my prayers to the victims and their families. I’m not trying to say one event is more important than the...

anothernightinthecity: Its sad, she was talented. But I’m not surprised. I’m really sad, but I’m also not really surprised about this. We all saw it coming… But it’s SUCH a loss of talent. She was one of the most exciting voices, I think, in the last few years. I was always hoping she’d put herself back together, and that Back to Black would just be the beginning...

We’re in a massive heatwave, but luckily the air conditioning is one of the few properly working parts of my car… and there is AC in my house. Imagine being in NY and having to walk around through all of this… and living in an un-air conditioned dorm (I’m having AC in my dorm for the first time this year, it’s fancy living). this heat… horrible.

New Approach Proposed for Science Curriculum... →
I absolutely agree with so many things in this article.  I’m always so confused when people ask me how I study Biology, because it’s just so much memorization. Memorization is necessary to an extent in science - you need to be able to immediately recognize the difference between nitrate and nitrate, or remember the differences between DNA and RNA - but remembering dry facts...

As Derek Bok, the former Harvard president, once observed, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” Still, we nation-build in Afghanistan and scrimp at home. but it’s the year I first started reading Harry Potter.. I remember flying through the first two books, and then my parents had to hide the third book because I was spending more time reading HP than doing my homework. Twelve years later, and we just watched the last movie. I went in my Ravenclaw colors. I was crying, shaking, and laughing through the whole thing. [Alan Rickman, AMAZING.] ...
